Short Hops, Quick Hits, and Other Sports Columnist Cliches as Well
- Weird phenomenon: In '95, '05, and this year, I think I've been much more stressed out/excited before the AFC Championship games than before the Super Bowls.
- Doomed: I'm not saying the Pirates are wrong to sign their reasonably above-average players to reasonable contracts to avoid arbitration/free agency. They've got few other options. But given the pitching staff's track record, there's still a pretty good chance that Paul Maholm is now destined to suck it in 2009.
- Prediction: Bruce Springsteen will play The Rising at halftime. Won't entirely guarantee it'll be the first song out of the gate, but that would be my guess. And apparently you can't bet on that anymore, which just seemed absurd and highly questionable to begin with.
- Never gets old: I know the guy's name is pronounced "Shuh-tan'," but still, I always snicker when I see his name in the sports headlines:
