Captain's Log: Atlanta
Assorted notes from the trip...

- Toured CNN. It was probably average as tours go, but I of course dig media stuff. Realized afterwards I should have called JQ, who might actually work at CNN Center. D'oh. But I can say I've been on the tallest freestanding escalator in the world -- the eight-story behemoth that's inside the building.
- Went to Zoo Atlanta. Not as big, impressive, or progressive-seeming as the Pittsburgh Zoo. But a pleasant place nonetheless, and they do have Pandas. Just don't wait in line at the Nathan's Hot Dog hut, unless you want to die of hunger. It has to be the slowest-moving line in the South.
- Went to the nearby Carter Center, to check out the Carter Presidential Library and Museum. It was OK, but I assume that the Reagan, Bush and Clinton libraries have become far more expansive and impressive since the Carter one was built. It reeked of 1981. I enjoyed the replica Oval Office, of course. There was some cool memorabilia to be seen and stuff to be learned. At the gift shop, I bought several "Presidents of the United States" bookmarks ($1), a small desktop Air Force One ($5), and a Carter pen as a joke for an Alex P. Keaton-type colleague.
- Had dinner at Watershed, part-owned by the Indigo Girls' Emily Saliers. No Emily sighting, but none was expected. Great food, however. The chef is a big-shot who worked for a couple of Georgia governors. I tried some of his traditional southern fare -- the pork chop, collard greens, and mac 'n cheese. I never thought I'd order anything involving mac n' cheese at an upscale restaurant!
