Emmy 2007 predictions
Predicted winners are in bold. Analysis follows. There's only so much I can know without watching every show, as the critics do. So obviously the shows I watch have the edge!
COMEDY SERIES: Entourage, The Office, 30 Rock, Two and a Half Men, Ugly Betty.
Analysis: Personally, I'd go with Entourage or Two and a Half Men. As much I love Steve Carell, I just don't get The Office. I think the raves it gets from critics is a symptom of how nearly extinct network sitcoms are. I don't care for the new breed of "Comedies that don't make you laugh that much but are smart and interesting," led by My Name is Earl & Co.
DRAMA SERIES: The Sopranos, Boston Legal, Grey's Anatomy, Heroes, House.
Analysis: Gonna be a Sopranos night. The Emmys love honoring shows on the way out. I think Grey's had a weak season. It should have won last year, but the Academy is consistently shunning it. Heroes is good, but not that good,.and I feel the novelty wore off a bit. Dr. House could pull the upset.
ACTOR - COMEDY: Ricky Gervais (Extras), Tony Shaloub (Monk), Steve Carell (Office), Alec Baldwin (30 Rock), Charlie Sheen (Two and a Half Men).
Analysis: I'll give Carell the credit. The critics like the show, and I like him. Charlie Sheen is funny, but not remarkable enough (Jon Cryer deserves it more -- see below). Gervais is hilarious, but not on the last season of Extras, which put me to sleep. I don't watch the others, but Shaloub is an Emmy fave and could win too. Alec Baldwin will be hurt by calling his daughter a whore.
ACTOR - DRAMA: Hugh Laurie (House), James Spader (Boston Legal), Denis Leary (Rescue Me), James Gandolfini (Sopranos), Kiefer Sutherland (24).
Analysis: Laurie (though I don't watch House) could pull the upset. Kiefer will be hurt by the "off year" consensus from 24 critics.
ACTRESS - COMEDY: Felicity Huffman (Desperate Housewives), Julia Louis-Dreyfus (New Adventures/Old Christine), Tiny Fey (30 Rock), America Ferrara (Ugly Betty), Mary-Louise Parker (Weeds).
Analysis: I watch none of these, but I'll agree with the general consensus on Ferrara. The buzz seems about right. Dreyfus is good, but I think the Emmy last year was a gift to break the Seinfeld curse.
ACTRESS - DRAMA: Sally Field (Brothers & Sisters), Kyra Sedgwick (The Closer), Mariska Hargitay (Law & Order SVU), Patricia Arquette (Medium), Edie Falco (Sopranos).
Analysis: Gotta give it to Falco. I don't think it was her best year for showing off her talents, but I know nothing of the others and I think she rides the Sopranos coattails into the sunset.
SUPPORTING ACTOR - COMEDY: Kevin Dillon (Entourage), Jeremy Piven (Entourage), Neil Patrick Harris (How I Met Your Mother), Rainn Wilson (Office), Jon Cryer (Two and a Half Men)
Analysis: Now here's a category where I know what I'm talking about. And I think all 5 are truly deserving. If I were handing it out, I'd have to go with Piven, making it back-to-back wins. But if I were trying to spread the love around (he's won already), I'd go with Cryer, who (like his show) is extremely underrated. But the Academy probably won't. Too "lowbrow." Harris is the dark horse here, and I wouldn't count him out.
SUPPORTING ACTOR - DRAMA: William Shatner (Boston Legal), Michael Imperioli (Sopranos), T.R. Knight (Grey's Anatomy), Masi Oka, Michael Emerson (Lost), Terry O'Quinn (Lost).
Analysis: Michael Emerson should win, hands down, and I'm predicting it. I have no idea who the "favorite" is, but he's my pick. His portrayal of Ben on Lost is just phenomenal. I concede the Academy could go with Oka, as they may want to recognize Heroes' accomplishments. But again, I think all six of these guys deserve it.
SUPPORING ACTRESS - DRAMA: Rachel Griffiths (Brothers & Sisters), Katherine Heigl (Grey's Anatomy), Chandra Wilson (Grey's), Sandra Oh (Grey's), Aida Turturro (Sopranos), Lorraine Bracco (Sopranos).
Analysis: I think Oh gets it, as they throw Grey's a bone. I'd give it to Chandra Wilson. But again, hard to pick among these. Katherine Heigl was ripped off big time last year, and should have been the runaway winner.
