Idol Finals, review and (not that fearless) prediction!
In one corner... Taylor Hicks, a 29-year-old Southerner with gray hair, no vocal training his entire life, and spaztic Joe Cocker-esque tendencies.
In the other corner...Katherine McPhee, a beautiful 21-year-old with vocal training out the ying-yang who could be on Broadway right now (and probably will be soon enough).
12 weeks ago, I picked Katherine to win it all. She made it to the finals. But I don't think she got the job done last night, at the most critical moment.
Taylor's a better overall performer. He's more energetic, more genuine, and 100 times the singer he appeared to be early on, when most of us thought he was a novelty act who would run out of gas.
In order for Kat to win, she had to be more flawless vocally last night, and a bit more genuine -- like last year's winner, Carrie Underwood, who honestly has one of the best and most stirring voices I have ever heard anywhere. Katherine isn't Carrie, and Taylor has a lot more going for him than last year's second-place finisher, Bo Bice.
Simon did his best to steer America in the direction of Taylor Hicks, and even though the show is full of surprises, I think America will go with that.
Taylor wins. America breaks the Idol mold. Soul Patrol!
